BJP leader Manikanth Rathod was arrested in Narayanpur village of Jewargi taluk of Kalaburagi district late Thursday night on charges of attempted murder, following a dramatic turn of events during the protest.
According to police sources, it all started when Rathod along with a group of villagers staged a protest in Narayanpur village demanding that the authorities arrest and externally arrest Rasheed Mutya, a local practitioner of traditional herbal medicine.
Rathod and the protesters said Rasheed’s activities were suspicious and called for immediate action against him.
The protest created a lot of drama in the village and the situation escalated when unidentified individuals threw stones at Rasheed Mutya’s vehicle as he was leaving the village in a car, causing considerable damage.
The driver of the car was injured in the attack.
Based on the complaint and preliminary investigation, the police have registered a case of attempt to murder against Rathod and are holding him responsible for inciting violence.
He was taken into police custody on Thursday and produced before a local court on Friday to be remanded in judicial custody.
A case was registered at Nelogi police station.
