Manchester United continued their rise in the Premier League with a thrilling 4-2 victory over Brighton at Old Trafford on Saturday, securing a third league win in a row – a feat they have not achieved since February 2024.
Ruben Amorim, overseeing Manchester United’s side, made it three wins in a row for the first time as head coach and led the Red Devils to fourth place with 16 points from their opening nine games.
The home side took control early on, Casemiro opening the scoring with a sharp strike that deflected past Yasin Ayari, followed by Matheus Cunha who broke his 16-match scoring streak to score his first goal for the club. United led 2-0 at the break and played with authority.
The dominance continued after the hour when Bryan Mbeumo added a third to seemingly put the game out of Brighton’s reach. But the visitors staged a late comeback when Danny Welbeck curled a superb free-kick into the net in the 75th minute to pull one back for his former club. Then, deep into stoppage time, Charalampos Kostoulas flicked in a header from a corner to make it 4-2 to add late drama. Brighton’s appeal for a foul in the set-piece and a red card for Patrick Dorga were waved away by the officials.
Despite a late scare, Mbeuma’s second goal, drilled into the roof of the net, had already settled United’s nerves and ensured all three points stayed at Old Trafford.
The victory adds to wins over Sunderland and Liverpool, boosts Manchester United’s momentum and sends a strong message to the Premier League title contenders: the Red Devils are firmly back in the sights.
