Manchester City put in a commanding performance to beat Chelsea 3-0 at Stamford Bridge to send a strong message in the Premier League title race and pile up the pressure on leaders Arsenal.
Pep Guardiola’s side now sit six points behind Arsenal with a game in hand and their upcoming clash could be decisive in shaping the title race. With momentum building, City appear to be hitting their peak form at exactly the right time of the season.
After a relatively even first half, City emphatically took control after the break. Nico O’Reilly opened the scoring just six minutes into the second half after a well-worked move by Ryan Cherki was instrumental throughout the game. Cherki then turned provider again and set up Marco Guehi to double the advantage in the 57th minute.
Jeremy Doku added a third goal in the 68th minute to complete a dominant display. The result marked City’s third major win in a row, following victories over Arsenal in the League Cup final and Liverpool in the FA Cup, underlining their growing dominance across competitions.
For Chelsea, the defeat marked another setback in their campaign for Champions League qualification. They remain inconsistent under Liam Rosenior and are now four points behind the top five, having managed just one win in their last seven league games.
At the opposite end of the table, Tottenham Hotspur’s relegation fears deepened after a 1-0 defeat at Sunderland. In Roberto De Zerbi’s first game in charge, Spurs slumped to their 16th defeat of the campaign and extended their winless streak to 14 games.
Nordi Mukiele scored the only goal of the game at the Stadium of Light to leave Tottenham two points to safety with six games remaining. Their situation was further complicated by Nottingham Forest, who picked up a point against Aston Villa.
Meanwhile, Crystal Palace strengthened their position with a 2-1 comeback win over Newcastle United.
As the season approaches its final stage, City’s resurgence has reignited the title battle, while Tottenham face an increasingly difficult task of avoiding relegation.
