Manchester City case will survive me: Jose Mourinho jokes about verdict

Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho has tackled the protracted legal dispute between Manchester City and the Premier League in a light-hearted way, joking that the case could last longer than his life. City challenged the ruling which found the club liable for multiple breaches of the league’s financial regulations.

An independent panel found City guilty of all charges regarding breaches of financial rules between the 2009-10 and 2017-18 seasons. The club was also found to have breached three of the four charges relating to its alleged failure to cooperate with the investigation. The city denied any wrongdoing and appealed the decision.

The Premier League has alleged that City relied on so-called “sham” commercial arrangements to overstate its revenue and understate its expenses by more than £900 million ($1.19 billion) over almost 10 years. Those practices, according to the league, led to inaccurate financial information and violations of its spending regulations.

Mourinho’s comments carry further context given his time in English football. He managed Manchester United from 2016 to 2018, a period that included the 2017–18 Premier League campaign in which his side finished second behind Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City.

Speaking on the matter, Mourinho said he would be lucky to be around until the final verdict is reached as City have already appealed the decision and more could follow.

“I would rather laugh at it,” Mourinho said when asked about the case in an interview with Italy’s Corriere dello Sport.

“I think we will eventually see the end, but we are both in our 60s and will have to be lucky enough to still be around when the final verdict comes.

“There will be a verdict, then an appeal, then another appeal.”

City currently top the table with a 100 per cent record to date after five games. They face Liverpool on Sunday 11 October at Anfield.
