A man wanted in six criminal cases was shot dead by unidentified armed assailants in Bihar’s Muzaffarpur district, police said on Monday (June 1, 2026).

The incident took place on Sunday (May 31, 2026) night in the basement of the Icon Towers apartment on Amar Cinema Road in the city, a senior officer said.

The deceased, identified as Govind Sharma, lived in a rented flat.

“The incident took place on Sunday (May 31, 2026) between 9.45 pm and 10 pm in the basement of the flat where Sharma was present. Five live cartridges and six blank cartridges were recovered from the spot,” Muzaffarpur SSP Kantesh Kumar Mishra told reporters.

A forensic team has reached the crime scene and collected evidence, he added.

Sharma has been named in six criminal cases in the past, including murder cases. He was accused in the murders of former Muzaffarpur mayor Sameer Kumar and real estate businessman Ashutosh Sahu, another officer said.

Police are trying to get CCTV footage from nearby areas and identify the gunmen, the SSP said.

“A special team led by the city superintendent of police has been formed to investigate the case. The police are investigating all aspects of the killing. We will get to the accused soon and take appropriate action,” he added.

He said police are investigating whether Sharma’s criminal background had any connection to the murder.

The SSP said two vehicles, said to belong to Sharma, were found parked in the basement of the flat where he died.
