Legendary Manchester United Stars Attend Denis Law’s Funeral
Manchester, UK – The Footballing world bid a final farewell to Manchester United legend Denis Law today, as thousands of mourners, including many of his former teammates and rivals, gathered to pay their respects to the beloved Scot. Law, who played for Manchester United, Hull City, and St. Helens during a glittering 22-year professional career, passed away on February 7th at the age of 84.
As the church was filled to capacity, a procession of Manchester United greats, past and present, made their way to the service. Sandy MacTavish, a close friend and teammate of Law’s at Manchester United, was among the first to arrive, accompanied by the likes of Sir Bobby Charlton, Nobby Stiles, and George Best’s brother, Harold. United’s current crop of stars, including Marcus Rashford, Scott McTominay, and Mason Greenwood, also paid their respects to the legendary forward.
Among the notable attendees were former United manager, Sir Matt Busby, who was visibly emotional as he mingled with family, friends, and fellow mourners. Busby, who signed Law in 1962, praised the player’s tireless work rate, skill on the field, and unwavering loyalty to the club.
"It’s a sad day, but it’s also a celebration of a life well-lived," Busby said in a statement. "Denis was an incredible talent, but more importantly, he was a true gentleman. He left everything on the pitch and was always willing to put the team first. He will be deeply missed, but his legacy lives on through the many lives he touched during his illustrious career."
During the service, relatives and friends shared anecdotes and tributes to Law’s incredible career, which saw him score over 200 goals in nearly 600 appearances. Tributes poured in from as far as Australia, where Law spent a brief stint with Melbourne City, and Norway, where he played for Vålerenga.
Law’s children, Mark and Susan, paid a heartfelt tribute to their father, recalling his infectious enthusiasm, unwavering dedication, and love for the beautiful game. "Dad always believed that, no matter how bad the game, you never gave up," Mark said. "He’d always say, ‘Mark, never let the opposition win, just keep fighting, and something will come out of it.’"
As the service concluded, the congregation rose to their feet in a standing ovation, bidding a final farewell to a true Manchester United legend. The funeral procession then made its way to the adjacent cemetery, where Law was laid to rest alongside his wife, Lorraine, who passed away in 1991.
As the Footballing world says its final farewell to Denis Law, we remember a living legend who inspired countless fans with his unwavering passion, limitless energy, and unrelenting passion for the game. Rest in peace, Denis Law. United will never forget you.
