Champions League qualification was on the line and it was Michael Carrick’s Manchester United who won 1-0 against a struggling Chelsea side at Stamford Bridge on Saturday night. It was Chelsea’s fourth straight defeat, further reducing their chances of securing an automatic qualification spot for next season’s Champions League.
With just five games remaining in the season, the battle for the top five is intensifying as teams fight for the remaining Champions League spots. Captain Bruno Fernandes, who assisted Matheus Cunha’s winner late in the first half, wants the team to get the job done quickly and efficiently.
“It’s an amazing feeling for us. We had to bounce back after two games without winning,” Fernandes told TNT Sports after the match. “I feel three points closer now, but we have another game to win. We know we need points to secure that place and we will do everything to be as quick as possible. We knew we had to put in a great performance because Chelsea are a good side. It’s important for us because we’re aiming to finish in the top four, so creating some distance is perfect for us.”
Fernandes has Premier League history in his sightsas his assist for Cunha was his 18th of the season. That leaves him behind only Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne with 20 (2019–20), Thierry Henry with 20 (2002–03) and Mesut Zil with 19 (2015–16) for the most assists in a single season. United, who fielded a depleted defense for this important game, remain third in the league table with 58 points, 10 ahead of sixth-placed Chelsea, with five games remaining.
UNITED EDGE CLOSER, CHELSEA TIME IS UP
Chelsea, on the other hand, boosted by the return of their star midfielder Enzo Fernandes, previously suspended for his comments about a potential move to Madrid, failed to score despite hitting the post twice and the crossbar once.
“When it comes to today’s game, it’s really, really difficult because people don’t want to hear me say how well we played and we didn’t win the game. We’re here to win,” Chelsea head coach Liam Rosenior said after the game, as quoted by The Guardian. “It doesn’t look like it at the moment, but the reality is that Manchester United came in, took one shot, scored and won the game 1-0, which should be basically impossible.”
Chelsea’s struggles in front of goal continue to dictate their decline, with the team now playing more than four league games and almost six and a half hours without finding a network. Despite creating chances in this match and going close on several occasions, their failure to convert at this crucial stage of the season proved costly.
Time is running out on their quest for a top-five finish and possibly Rosenior’s tenure as head coach. Chelsea remain on 48 points, 4 points behind Liverpool in the qualifiers. They next travel to Brighton while United host Brentford.
