Man spends ₹37 crore on bride he’s never met: Days after wedding, wife starts pulling one surprise after another | Today’s news

A 32-year-old Chinese man married a woman he had never met in person. The entire courtship consisted of a single five-minute video call. They married just three days after the show, the South China Morning Post reported.

To many Indians, this may sound like an arranged marriage fit for special occasions. Such formalities are in practice for those who cannot come for a physical visit. However, there is a twist. Nine days later, the Chinese deeply regretted the decision.

Gu, from Zhejiang province, blamed intense parental pressure for his hasty choice. He registered with a local matchmaking center for 200 yuan (less than 3000).

Three local women rejected him. The matchmaker then suggested women from other provinces. A 30-year-old woman from Shaanxi was introduced in April.

Her profile stated that she had no debts, no criminal record and no serious illness. She agreed to the flash marriage. During their brief video call, Gu asked about her work and family. Most of the questions were answered by the matchmaker himself.

Guo’s family agreed to proceed without meeting her in person. They spent 265,000 yuan ( 37 million in total). This included 100,000 yuan ( 14 lakh) bride price and 160,000 yuan (approx 22 lakh) matchmaking fee. The matchmaker accompanied the woman to Guo’s city, according to SCMP.

After the marriage was registered, the promised credit and medical reports never arrived. Gu took his new wife to the bank himself to check her credit history. He found that he had a debt of 100,000 yuan. She claimed the debts belonged to an ex-boyfriend.

Other problems appeared quickly. The name on her mobile payment app didn’t match the name he knew. She then revealed his liver enzyme status and told him he needed to lose weight. She insisted that no problem was affecting her fertility.

Nine days after the wedding, Gu demanded a divorce. His wife agreed at first, then changed her mind completely. Instead, she sued him for divorce. She claimed his demand caused her to develop depression and provided a medical diagnosis.

She then sought 50,000 yuan ( 7 million) as compensation. She also accused him of requiring her to wear make-up, do housework and get a job.

Gu separately sued the matchmaking center for a refund of the 160,000 yuan fee. The center refused. They argued that since he had married the woman they introduced, their duty had been fulfilled. They suggested that the couple had staged a fake divorce purely to get money.

Reaction on social networks

The story went viral and sparked widespread discussion on the Internet. Reactions ranged from amusement to sharp criticism.

“If you treat marriage like a game, marriage will teach you a lesson,” SCMP quoted a social media user as saying.

According to another user, some people get married after only knowing each other for a few days. A third called the situation more absurd than the plot of a TV drama.
