A 38-year-old man from Uttar Pradesh was arrested at Vellore’s Katpadi railway station on Wednesday for impersonating a passenger examiner (TTE).
The arrested person has been identified as Hemath Rastogi, a native of UP. Initial investigation revealed that the victim, Ali, 43, a native of Assam, was working as a construction worker in Chittoor, Andhra Pradesh. He came to the railway station to send his friends to Assam.
After sending them, Ali decided to book a flight to Assam. As he approached the pre-sales center at the railway station, Rastogi intervened and offered to help Ali book a ticket. In return, Rastogi demanded ₹7,500 as commission.
Ali told police that he paid the money to Rastogi, who said he would get the ticket for his cell phone, and left the scene. After a long wait, Ali realized that he had been cheated and complained to the State Railway Police (GRP) at the railway station.
A police team found Rastogi on one of the platforms at the railway station. Police recovered ₹7,500, fake railway tickets and mobile phones from him. A case was registered and Rastogi was lodged in Vellore Central Jail. Another probe is underway.
