Youth Congress general secretary Sajna B. Sajan said in a social media post that she had written to the All India Congress Committee (AICC), including Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, to request a commission of inquiry comprising national women leaders in public positions to meet the alleged survivors, record their statements and allow the party to take a stand on the allegations against Congress lawmaker Rahul Mamkootath.
Ms Sajan said she was the victim of an apparently well-coordinated cyber attack that included a barrage of invective, threats and misogynistic slurs. She said that the complaint to the AICC was an act of defiance against such shameful attacks.
Meanwhile, Communist Party of India (Marxist) State Secretary MV Govindan demanded the immediate resignation of Mr. Mamkootathil. He said the continuation of the accused as Palakkad MLA is legally and morally unsustainable.
Congress decided to meet the demand. AICC general secretary in charge of Kerala Deepa Dasmusi seems to have found fault with the alleged survivor for approaching the chief minister’s political office instead of the police. “Congress upholds the rule of law,” she said.
Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee president Sunny Joseph, MLA, said the case was in its nascent stage. “The charge is not a declaration of guilt by the court,” he added.
United Democratic Front convener Adoor Prakash said the timing of the complaint seemed suspicious and deeply political. “Several Congress leaders, including me, have borne the brunt of false allegations only to be found baseless by the courts,” he said.
Leader of the Opposition VD Sathesan declined to comment.
Former Bharatiya Janata Party state president K. Surendran asked the Congress to force Mr. Mamkootathila to resign as a legislator. He also demanded the immediate arrest of Mr. Mamkootathila.
