The Thiruvananthapuram Principal District and Sessions Court on Monday reserved its verdict on the anticipatory bail plea filed by Palakkad MLA Rahul Mamkootathil in connection with the second rape case registered against him.
The court granted the lawmaker temporary protection from arrest pending sentencing on December 10. Until then, no coercive measures, including arrest, can be used against him.
The crime branch has booked Mr. Mamkootathila for allegedly raping a 23-year-old non-resident Keralite in 2023.
According to the prosecution, the lawmaker allegedly befriended the deceased on social media, proposed to her and convinced her to meet him at the family where the assault allegedly took place.
Meanwhile, a special investigation team led by Assistant Inspector General of Coastal Police G. Poonguzhalim submitted the survivor’s detailed statement along with digital evidence to the court.
In her statement, the woman allegedly stated that she had been subjected to a violent attack in which she had injuries all over her body. She claimed the lawmaker continued the assault despite her pleas to stop, and that she experienced panic attacks and difficulty breathing during the incident. After the incident, he told her that he would not be able to marry her.
The survivor also alleged that the MLA tried to contact her again, verbally abused her over the phone and visited the vicinity of her home several times and pressured her to meet him. She said she refrained from performing earlier due to fear of repercussions.
