The main Minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee met on Wednesday (9 July 2025) with the chairman of the Tata Natarajan Chandrasecaran group and said it could help deepen the presence of the group in the state.
This means a significant development after long turbulent relationships between the two entities that culminated in the Tata Nano car factory in 2008.
This comes almost 17 years after the then chairman of the Tata Group, Ratan Tata, decided to move the Singur factory in the middle of extended and prolonged protests over the terrestrial dispute in this area. Agitation appeared when a large proportion of local farmers opposed the alleged violent acquisition of their agricultural land for the factory and claimed that the offered compensation was insufficient and that many were not willing to give up fertile, multiple land that was their primary source of livelihood.
The official description of the Trinamool Congress on X shared a video about the meeting between Tata Group and Mrs. Banerjee, who took place in the presence of the main secretary Manoj Pant.
“Their conversation focused on deepening the presence of the TATA group in the state and emphasized the establishment of Bengal as a preferred goal for leaders’ leaders,” Trinamool said.
On October 3, 2008, under the pressure of tireless protests, Ratan Tata announced the decision to resign from the plan to set up a small car factory in Singur in the Hooghly district in West Bengal. The movement was the main milestone in the political career of Mamata Banerjee and became an important factor in its victory in the subsequent elections of the State Assembly against the 34 -year -old Communist Party of India (Marxist) government in West Bengal.
In 2011, when Mamata Banerjee-Strinamool Congress defeated the left front, Mrs. Banerjee announced in her first media interaction that the land obtained from farmers for the Singuro factory would be returned to them. The land with an area of 997 hectares was handed over to farmers in 2016 after the Supreme Court declared that the acquisition of land illegal.
CM also met the Vietnamese ambassador to India, Nguyen Thanh Hai, Tuesday to discuss bilateral ties. He also tried to promote better business and business links between Vietnam and the West Bengal.
These meetings come as an effort to strengthen business in the state before the elections together 2026.
