Major Minister West Bengalka Mamata Banerjee announced on Thursday that the government will provide £1.10 Lakh for each of the approximately 40,000 Durga Puja committees throughout the state, PTI reported.
Banerjee focused on the meeting of Durg Puja organizers and stated that the decision should help committees to manage the largest Bengal festival and recognize their role in cultural and community life.
“The government stands in humans. Durga Puja is not just a religious celebration; it is a cultural festival that connects everyone. We want to ensure that the organizers can manage expenditure without stress,” Baerjee quoted.
She also remembered the development of grants that started £10,000 in 2018 and were increased in response to inflation and increasing celebration costs. In 2019 the grant increased £25,000, doubled £50,000 during the Covid-19 pandemic and increased to £85,000 in 2024.
Together with other financial assistance, Mamata Baerjee said that various government agencies and civic authorities, including the fire brigade, Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC), Panchayats and municipalities would not introduce any taxes or fees for the service.
“This year, no fees will be charged with a fire brigade, civil authorities or other provider of services by the state. We are standing with you to organize Puja without financial stress,” Banerjee said.
She also asked the organizers of Puja to help migrant workers to return to the state.
“I would like to ask the committees to help migrants who are returning after torture. Let’s join and offer them relief and respect,” she said.
Banerjee claims that the migrant workers of West Bengal face torture in the States of Durated BJP.
One of the most anticipated festivals of West Bengal, Durg Puja, an event recognized by the UNESCO cultural heritage.
Before the announcement, Borejee was reportedly scheduled to meet with several Durga Puja committees from the entire state at the internal stadium, NEJJI, PTI said.
