The renowned dancer, activist and Chancellor Kerala Kalamandalam, Mallika Sarabhai, argued that in her new academic role there was a restriction on her freedom of expression.
In a sincere Facebook post on Wednesday (April 30, 2025), Mrs. Sarabhai thought about her experience and wrote: “Today I got the first taste of what it means to be a Chancellor of the University. Limited speech.” Its notes come as a result of the ongoing protest of ASHA (an accredited social health activist) in Thrissur who require better wages and improve working conditions.
She expressed the support of this matter and stated that ASHA workers are “poorly paid and used” despite the critical work they do throughout the country.
Mrs. Sarabhai also emphasized the initiative for crowdfunding citizens, led by the well -known writer and activist Sarah Joseph, to support the workers in Thrissur, where she was invited to participate on Thursday.
However, Mrs. Sarabhai revealed that after expressing her personal opinion on the matter, she was seemingly recommended against bringing her to question the restrictions that are now placed on their public voice.
“In Thrissur, the disturbance of ASHA workers is to increase their reward.
“I was asked for my opinion and I gave it like me, as I did my whole life. Oh, he didn’t allow it anymore. She wrote on her Facebook page.
She did not publish who tried to impose these restrictions on her freedom of expression.
The condemning alleged curbs, the leaders of the protesters of ASHA, said they would expect Sarabhai to participate on the protest online on Thursday evening.
Neither the left government nor the university authorities have responded to the accusation.
The left government appointed Sarabhai as Chancellor Keral Kalamandalam considered a university for art and culture 6 December 2022.
