An active shooter incident was reported at the Mall of Louisiana on Thursday (April 23), prompting a large-scale emergency response from local and state authorities.
According to officials, law enforcement rushed to the scene after reports of gunfire believed to have come from near the mall’s food court. The mall, one of the largest retail destinations in Baton Rouge, was immediately placed on lockdown and all entrances and exits were secured as officers worked to contain the situation.
Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry confirmed that he is actively cooperating with law enforcement. In a public statement, he urged residents to avoid the area while emergency responders responded. He also expressed concern for the injured and praised the quick response of rescuers.
“I am aware of an active shooter scene at the Mall of Louisiana. I am coordinating with law enforcement and will update as we know more. Please avoid the area. Sharon and I are praying for those affected and are grateful for the quick response of our law enforcement officials.”
Preliminary reports from local sources indicate that at least six people were injured and taken to nearby medical facilities. St. Mary’s by the Lake Regional Medical Center was reportedly preparing to handle a potential mass casualty situation. However, the conditions of the injured have not yet been released.
Emergency medical teams set up a triage area near the mall’s JCPenney location to treat victims at the scene. Authorities are currently searching for two suspects believed to be involved in the shooting.
Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill said she has been in contact with District Attorney Hillar Moore and confirmed that officials are closely monitoring the situation regarding the discharge of weapons inside the mall.
Roads around the mall were temporarily affected as law enforcement secured the perimeter and facilitated emergency operations. Residents were advised to stay close and rely on official channels for verified updates.
The motive is still under investigation. Authorities have not released further information and the situation is still evolving.
