The Malappuram District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) has been rated the best in the state for its performance in 2024-25. The achievement was announced at the annual meeting of the Kerala Legal Services Authority (KeLSA) held on Friday (December 5) in Kochi. Kottayam and Thrissur DLSA won second and third place respectively.
Malappuram DLSA bagged the highest award for effective implementation of a wide range of service schemes in the past year. She was ranked third in the state in 2023-24. Foremost among DLSA’s activities was the effort to reach out to the tribal communities living in the Nilambur forests and provide them with free legal aid.
Led by Chairman and Chief District Judge K. Sanil Kumar and Secretary and Senior Civil Division Judge M. Shabir Ibrahim, the DLSA initiated measures to upgrade basic facilities for the Nilamburu tribal communities. Mr Ibrahim said they also focused on extending legal aid to women, children, the elderly, prisoners and the disabled.
He said that special attention was paid to the timely implementation of all projects planned by national and state legal services authorities. Special care was also taken in the audit, he said. Malappuram DLSA has achieved success in settling criminal, civil, family and financial disputes through mediation by consistently adopting a conciliatory approach.
Through its Samvada programme, DLSA has familiarized high school and senior secondary school students with court proceedings. “The program is running smoothly and without interruption,” Mr Ibrahim said. The Manjeri District Mediation Center won the highest award for solving the highest number of cases in the recent Mediation for the Nation campaign. More than 3,000 cases were resolved in a single day during the National Lok Adalat organized by DLSA at Manjeri on 13 September. Mr. Ibrahim attributed the success of Lok Adalat to the effectiveness of ADR mechanisms.
Mr. Sanil Kumar and Mr. Ibrahim received the DLSA Best Award from Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Nitin Madhukar Jamdar. KelSa Executive Chairman Justice A. Muhamed Mustaque and Secretary Member Anil Bhaskar were present.
