Malala Yousafzai, the youngest Nobel Peace Prize laureate and a global symbol of courage and resilience, has shared a heartwarming insight into her love story with husband Asser Malik.
In a candid street interview with Meetcutenyc, the couple recalled how they first met seven years ago during a go-karting trip. “I had a little accident,” laughed Malala. “I was actually very nervous and worried,” Asser added, admitting he was worried she might have a concussion.
The accident turned into the beginning of a bond that deepened over time. “There are many things I like about him; he’s smart, he’s kind, he cares about people and he’s funny. And more importantly, he laughs at my jokes,” Malála said with a smile. Asser’s favorite thing about her? “Definitely her sense of humor… and her faces. I’m a big fan of her faces,” he joked.
The pair also reflected on what keeps their relationship strong. “For a relationship to be healthy, you need open conversations. You need to be patient and kind,” Malala said. She revealed that they make it a point to address any tension immediately, even if it takes a few tries to open up. “He’ll ask me over and over again, ‘Are you okay?’ And after the fifth one, I finally say, ‘Yeah, I’m a little pissed off.'”
Feeling safe enough to express emotions is crucial for Malala: “When you don’t feel judged, you can be yourself and talk about things.”
The 28-year-old activist also spoke about how their seven-year age difference gives their marriage a special dynamic. In a TikTok video posted on August 20, she offered what she called “free relationship advice”, saying: “If you marry someone a bit older like I did, suddenly you’ll be at legendary rock concerts – and I’ll admit, Oasis in Dublin ended up being a show I loved as much as Asser.”
Malala, who became a global icon after surviving a Taliban assassination attempt at just 15, continues to inspire millions.
