Make in India turns 12: PM Modi highlights growth in manufacturing, investment and exports | Today’s news

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday celebrated 12 years of the ‘Make in India’ initiative, highlighting the transformation witnessed across sectors.

In a post on X, PM Modi highlighted growth in domestic manufacturing, investment and exports, saying, “More Made in India. More investment in India. More exports from India. Transformation visible across sectors! #12YearsOfMakeInIndia.”

The ‘Make in India’ initiative was launched on 25 September 2014 to strengthen India’s manufacturing ecosystem and position the country as a global hub for manufacturing, design and innovation.

Speaking on the occasion, Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said that India has moved from an ambition to manufacture primarily for its domestic market to becoming a country capable of manufacturing for global markets.

“The real story of Make in India goes beyond these numbers. It is the trust it has created. The trust among our startup founders, entrepreneurs, manufacturers, innovators, exporters and most importantly our people that ‘India can make, India can innovate and India can compete with the world’,” Goyal said.

According to government data, the manufacturing sector has seen strong growth in recent years, while production-linked incentive (PLI) schemes have helped boost investment, production and exports.

It helped boost domestic production

As on March 31, 2026, PLI schemes attracted around ₹2.40 lakh actual investment and generated production and sales worth approx. ₹23.8,000,000 crores, while exports stand at around ₹15.2 million million and more than 14.6 million direct and indirect jobs.

The electronics manufacturing industry has also expanded significantly over the past 12 years. Electronics manufacturing grew from the surrounding area ₹1.9 lakh crore in 2014-15 approx ₹13.11 lakh crore by 2025-26, while mobile phone production grew from approx. ₹18,000 million crowns ₹6.27 million crowns.

The government said the initiative helped boost domestic manufacturing capacity while encouraging investment, innovation and integration with global supply chains.
