A day after the Mahayuti alliance swept the local polls in Maharashtra, NCP (SP) leader Supriya Sule on Monday (December 22, 2025) questioned whether the BJP core won on the strength of its own leaders or defectors.
The Mahayuti alliance of the BJP, Shiv Sena and the NCP swept the elections to 288 municipal councils and nagar panchayats and won 207 president posts in local bodies, according to results declared on Sunday (December 21). The opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) could come up with a total of 44.
The State Election Commission said the BJP won 117 posts of municipal presidents, the Shiv Sena won 53 and the NCP won 37 posts. Congress won 28, NCP (SP) seven and Shiv Sena (UBT) nine.
“The results were not surprising as there was a split in votes due to the split in NCP and Shiv Sena. It is also a fact that those in power are winning such local elections,” she told reporters.
“But did the BJP win on its own strength or on the strength of those who defected to it from other parties?” asked Mrs. Sule.
Asked about speculations that the Ajit Pawar-led NCP and the NCP (SP) might jointly fight the Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad municipal corporation polls, she said neither party had made any official proposal for an alliance.
“We want to take everyone with us on the development agenda,” Ms. Sule added.
Maharashtra NCP (SP) chief Shashikant Shinde said the organization is keen on a broad alliance of like-minded parties in Mumbai to defeat the BJP.
Polls to 29 city corporations, including Mumbai and Pune, will be held on January 15, while votes will be counted the following day.
