Maharashtra farmers stage protests, seek aid against drought; doing everything possible, he will not let them suffer: CM

The break in monsoon has led to a drought-like situation in parts of Marathwada and Vidarbha regions of Maharashtra. At least 83 taluks in 19 districts have seen rain for more than 20 days, with some areas remaining rain-free for more than 40 days, according to the agriculture department.

Farmers on Wednesday demanded that the Maharashtra government officially declare drought in the affected districts, provide compensation and implement relief measures.

The government ordered a country-level assessment from October 5 to assess the extent of damage and provide aid to affected farmers.

Farmers in Washim and Beed districts hit the roads on Wednesday. In Washi, token protests were led by NCP(SP) leader Rohit Pawar.

“Farmers have lost their crops and are facing heavy losses. Laborers are in a similar situation,” he said. Mr. Pawar demanded a compensation of ₹50,000 per hectare for the families of farmers and ₹25,000 for the families of farm labourers.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said, “We will not let the farmers suffer. We will help them with everything we have. I have directed the officials concerned to prepare a framework to help the affected.”

Criticism from Oppn.

The opposition criticized the government for “wasting time” with the polls.

Congress leader Vijay Wadettiwar said, “The kharif crop has gone into crisis. Farmers are facing losses in soybean, paddy and other crops due to lack of rains.”
