Handing over the keys to 557 flats in the BDD Chawl redevelopment project in Mumbai’s Lower Parel, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Friday (6 November 2026) said, “Don’t sell the house”, marking the first phase of rehabilitation at the site.
557 families were given 500 sq ft houses in three rehabilitation buildings constructed under NM Joshi Marg BDD chawl redevelopment by MHADA. “We have been striving to give the residents of BDD chawls, who have lived in 160 sq ft houses for generations, a 500 sq ft house in a high-rise building under the BDD chawl redevelopment. This dream is now becoming a reality,” added Mr. Fadnavis.
Mr. Fadnavis also directed MHADA to complete rehabilitation of all BDD residents by 2030 at an event organized at Yashwantrao Chavan Center in the presence of Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Sunetra Pawar.
This was the third distribution under the BDD Chawl redevelopment project where 15,593 residents are being rehabilitated. Rehabilitation of residents of BDD chawls has been allocated at three locations: NM Joshi Marg, Naigaon and Worli. After the completion of the first phase buildings, the ownership of the houses is handed over to the eligible residents.
MHADA Vice President Sanjeev Jaiswal said, “Possession of 3933 houses have been handed over so far. NM Joshi Marg chawl project will be completed by December 2029, Naigaon project also by December 2029 and Worli project by June 2030.”
Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said residents are getting good facilities under this redevelopment and all facilities will continue to be provided.
Homes for BMC workers
At the same event, a project of 140 flats for sanitation workers was inaugurated at Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) under Ashray Yojana Cell, Phase 2, at Panchsheel Nagar, Colaba.
Mr. Fadnavis said, “Two schemes, Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Shramsafalya scheme and Valmiki Housing, have been started for sanitation workers and handed over to the worker’s son when he joins the job in his place. The service premises will be available to the sanitation workers till 2028.”
Prefab technology was used for the first time in a building built by a municipal authority.
“Sanitation workers clean the roads and protect the health of Mumbaikars. During the Covid period, they served without caring about their own lives. The first phase of the initiative to provide services to 29,000 sanitation workers of BMC has started. 146 employee colonies will be rebuilt gradually, the home site will be 300 sqft 10ft.”
Speaker Rahul Narwekar said, “The realization of dream homes for 29,000 sanitation workers in Mumbai has started with the crucial distribution of 140 flats in Panchsheel Nagar.”
Under the Ashray Yojana, 30 colonies are being rehabilitated in three phases. A total of 12,144 houses will be provided: 11,371 houses of 300 square feet and 773 houses of 600 square feet. Service facilities will be available to all 29,000 sanitation workers of the BMC.
