Mahanagar Gas hikes CNG prices by ₹2/kg as LNG prices continue to rise

As liquefied natural gas (LNG) prices remain elevated due to renewed escalation of tensions in West Asia, city gas distributor Mahanagar Gas Ltd (MGL) said late on Monday that it will increase compressed natural gas (CNG) prices by ₹2 per kg at all its retail outlets from September 1.

Apart from this, the city gas distributor would also increase domestic piped gas (D-PNG) rates by ₹1 for every standard cubic meter (SCM).

With the latest hike, the price of CNG at MGL retail outlets has cumulatively increased by ₹6 per kg in three tranches starting May 14.

The increase is similar to that of Indraprastha Gas Ltd, which raised auto gas prices, albeit by nearly ₹10 per kg in five tranches after a recent hike of ₹3.89/kg on 29 August.

In a statement, MGL explained that the increase would seek to offset the increase in the input price of gas, which has “significantly affected the overall cost of gas supplied by the company”.

“There is a significant demand for CNG, the major part of the input gas for the CNG segment is met through imported Spot RLNG. The above factors have led to a significant increase in the input cost of gas for the CNG segment,” it said.
