Manchester United defender Harry Maguire slams the referee after his controversial red card during Manchester United’s 2-2 draw with Bournemouth in the Premier League on Friday (March 20). Maguire was booked in the 79th minute for a foul on Evanilson in the penalty area as he was deemed to have stopped a clear scoring opportunity. United were leading 2-1 at this point and Eli Junior Kroupi converted from the spot to secure a point for the home side at the Vitality Stadium.

However, fans and pundits were left fuming as United were similarly denied a spot-kick in the 67th minute when they were 1-0 up in the match. Amad Diallo was brought down in the box by Adrien Truffert and the Cherries then scored at the other end when the Bournemouth defender escaped without being booked.
On Instagram after the game, Maguire said the decision was a soft one, but claimed it was the state of the game at the moment, despite the presence of VAR. The United defender said he expected both decisions should ideally be the same.
“So soft but that’s football atm and I should know better. You’d think both decisions would have the same result. We’ll be back after the break. Safe journey home reds, your support has been unbelievable,” Maguire said.
WHAT DID CARRICK SAY AFTER THE GAME?
Manchester United caretaker manager Michael Carrick was furious after the game and slammed a call from referee Stuart Attwell. Carrick said both challenges should have been penalties and was shocked to see his side get neither for the challenge on Diallo.
“I think they’re both penalties and it’s a huge moment in the game and then it ends in chaos. A huge moment and I don’t see how you can give one and not the other, it’s crazy,” Carrick told the BBC.
“If (Attwell) thinks that’s a penalty to start with, then there has to be a second one. I don’t see how you can’t give that.
The result meant that United went into the break in third place with 55 points from 31 games. They had the chance to boost their bid for a UEFA Champions League place with a win, but the stalemate has now opened the door for Aston Villa, Liverpool and Chelsea to close the gap on the Red Devils.
