Madras High Court closes application for registration of FIR in ₹4 crore cheating complaint against C. Vijayabaskar

On 1 October, the Madras High Court dismissed a petition filed by AIADMK candidate for Alangudi Assembly constituency Dhana Vimal seeking registration of a First Information Report (FIR) against former minister C. Vijayabaskar (now in TVK) for allegedly defrauding him of ₹4 million.

Justice V. Lakshminarayanan closed the case after Additional Public Prosecutor (APP) Arun Anbumani told the court that the Deputy Superintendent of Police, Pudukottai District Police, conducted a preliminary inquiry into the complaint but found no material to register an FIR.

According to the complainant, Mr. Vijayabaskar, during his tenure in the AIADMK, called him over phone on 11 November 2025 and asked him to arrange ₹5 crore to prove that he could meet the election expenses if he was declared the party’s candidate in the Alangudi constituency.

The complainant claimed that he had mobilized ₹4.5 crore from various sources and accused the former minister of returning only ₹50 crore but not the rest of the ₹4 crore. However, based on the investigation, the complainant was unable to prove the sources from which he was allegedly able to withdraw the money, APP said.

“He brought so many people, including his employees and farm labourers, to claim that he had borrowed money from them, but investigation revealed that these people had no source to lend thousands of rupees to the complainant,” Mr Anbumani told Justice Lakshminarayanan.

After recording his submission, the judge closed the motion before him, stating that the complainant can avail of other legal remedies such as filing a private complaint in the competent court.
