Andhra Pradesh BJP president PVN Madhav has expressed grave concern over the hardship faced by mango farmers in Chittoor district, especially those of the Totapuri variety, due to the steep fall in market prices.

In a press release on Saturday (June 27, 2026), he said that while the state government’s decision to provide ₹4 per kg as support price to mango growers offers temporary relief, a permanent and sustainable solution is a must.

The recurring crisis that farmers face every season highlights the urgency of structural reforms in the horticulture sector, he stressed.

Mr. Madhav emphasized that the mango industry in Chittoor district should be transformed through value addition, diversification, branding and stronger market linkages, and instead of relying only on the sale of raw mangoes, the government should promote processing industries, pulping units and export-oriented infrastructure to ensure better returns for farmers.

He further suggested adopting successful branding models and promoting a diversified mix of mango varieties based on market demand and strengthening farmer producer organizations to increase farmers’ bargaining power and help them secure better prices through collective marketing.

He also urged the central and state governments, agricultural scientists, MSMEs, food industry and other stakeholders to prepare a comprehensive plan for the long-term development of the horticulture sector in Chittoor district to ensure that no farmer is forced to dump his produce on the roads due to lack of remunerative prices.
