Madanapalle officials said to prepare for HNSS water supply

The anticipated waters of Handri-Neeva Sujala Sravanthi (HNSS) are expected to reach Madanapalle division in Annamayya district between September 12 and 15. The development prompted District Collector Annamayya Nishanth Kumar to direct officials to give top priority to filling drinking water tanks to prevent shortage in the coming months.

In an emergency meeting with the officials concerned here on Monday, the Collector directed the Irrigation and Coordination Department to immediately complete the preparations to protect the water resources.

“Chippili, SS and Guddivaripalli SS reservoirs, which meet the drinking water needs of Madanapalle town, should be filled on priority. Steps should be taken to temporarily increase the storage level of Chippili reservoir to hold more water than last year. Guddivaripalli reservoir should be filled to full capacity,” Nishanth Kumar said.

The Collector instructed officials to deploy round-the-clock monitoring teams to keep an eye on water leakages, canal flows and tank filling. “The teams are made up of staff from irrigation, revenue, police, APSPDCL, agriculture and horticulture departments,” he said.

The Collector also instructed officials to plan to fill the Veligallu reservoir to at least 50% of its capacity through the HNSS main channel. Supplying water to the tanks should be completed between September 3 and 5, he said.

Given the possibility of increased demand for potable water under El Niño conditions, the collector emphasized that available HNSS water should be used judiciously, with potable water requirements taking precedence over other needs.
