Around 300 leaders from across Kerala are expected to gather for an expanded state committee meeting of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)) scheduled to begin in Kozhikode from Sunday (September 13, 2026).

According to CPI(M) sources, district secretariat members from across the state and senior functionaries of CPI(M) class and mass organizations will participate in the event besides state committee members. Members of the Central Committee and members of the Political Bureau will oversee the meeting. Although party leaders say the effort is to create an action plan for the future, the recent setbacks suffered by the CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front in the assembly polls in the state are on the agenda. Along with this, the Enforcement Directorate (ED)-led to implicate former Chief Minister and Politburo member Pinarayi Vijayan and his son-in-law and Beypore MLA PA Mohamed Riyas are also likely to figure in the negotiations.

Instructions ready

The party’s Central Committee has already prepared a review of the electoral performance and proposed corrective measures. An extended meeting of the state committee was reportedly proposed as a platform to discuss the remedial exercise. Prior to this, the State Committee prepared a set of guidelines to be discussed at the extended meeting in Kozhikode.

Asked about the nature of the discussions, a senior leader from North Kerala said the reasons behind the election debacle would definitely be taken up.

“We have seen a significant erosion of support among working-class voters who have supported the party for a long time. Most of the votes have clearly shifted to the Congress and the BJP. Although the LDF has tried to promote the cause of development, the middle class, its biggest beneficiaries, have also not supported us,” he said.

The leader pointed out that consecutive years in power had created a section of party activists who became interested in accumulating wealth. “This is an irony for a party that stands behind the abolition of private property. While the party apparatus has lost direct control over the government over the years, a section of leaders who were close to the powers-that-be allegedly made financial gains by using their influence. The expanded state committee is expected to come up with a clear plan of action to counter all these tendencies,” the leader said.

MA Baby, general secretary of the CPI(M), will inaugurate the meeting at the AKG Auditorium near the party’s Kozhikode district committee office. After the inauguration ceremony, the Secretary of State is expected to present a report prepared by the State Committee. Afterwards, participants will engage in group discussions, followed by an open debate with selected members.
