Delhi Capitals have confirmed the return of their star overseas pacer Lungi Ngidi after he recovered from a head injury sustained during the match against Punjab Kings in Delhi on 25 April. The South African fast bowler was seen bowling in the nets ahead of the franchise’s clash against Rajasthan Royals in Jaipur on May 1 in a video shared by DC on their social media.
Ngidi, who was taken to hospital, appears to have injured his head in the pursuit of PBKS. He suffered a blow while backing up from half-off in an attempt to make the catch PBKS opener Priyansh Arya. However, he threw the chance away and fell backwards, hitting his head hard on the ground. He immediately grabbed the back of his head in pain and was unable to stand up.
Play was interrupted for a significant period of time as physio and medical staff rushed onto the pitch to attend to Ngidi, which remained lying on the grass. His neck and head were stabilized with a brace before he was placed on a stretcher and taken to an ambulance for further evaluation.
In a video shared by the franchise, New Zealand pacer Kyle Jamieson can be heard saying, “Ngidi is back, back again!”, before the clip cuts to Ngidi bowling in full intensity, hitting the stumps and celebrating with energy.
Ngidi missed DC’s defeat against Royal Challengers Bengaluru and is likely to remain unavailable for the RR game as well due to ICC protocols, according to a Cricbuzz report. The report added that the ICC mandates a mandatory seven-day break for any player diagnosed with concussion. He further noted that Ngidi has been advised to follow the same guidelines even though the IPL 2026 playing conditions do not specifically mention this rule.
Ngidi has been one of DC’s standout bowlers this season, picking up seven wickets at an average of 29.42 in six innings. Meantime, Delhi Capitals find themselves in a slumpwho have lost two matches in contrast and are currently seventh in the points table with six points.
