Skywatchers Worldwide is in a spectacular show on 7 – 8 September, as a total lunar eclipse, popularly called Blood Moon or Chandra Grahan, lights up the night sky. Thanks to its long overall phase and broad visibility, this event promises to be one of the most phenomenal lunar displays in recent years.
What makes the blood month so noticeable?
During the total eclipse of the moon, the Earth moves directly between the sun and the moon and throws its shadow over the lunar surface. Instead of disappearing, the moon shines dark red, giving it an iconic appearance of the “blood month”. This living color is a natural phenomenon caused by sunlight passing through the Earth’s atmosphere, filtering shorter blue wavelengths and leaving red and orange light reaching the moon.

Why the Moon turns red?
The red shade of the moon during a complete eclipse is explained by Rayleigh. Lower wavelengths such as blue and purple scattering in the atmosphere, while longer wavelengths – red and oranges – pass, illuminate the moon in warm tones. The result is a shining Crimson Moon, a breathtaking view visible on multiple continents.

How long will Eclipse last?

Where will the blood month be visible?
The eclipse will be visible throughout Asia, Australia, Africa and Europe, allowing billions of people to witness at least part of this phenomenon. Some partial opinions can also be seen in parts of Alaska and Argentina, while most North America will miss an eclipse.
