Lieutenant General Rajiv Ghai, who currently serves as the Deputy Chief of the Indian Army and who led military operations as the Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) during Operation Sindoor last year, has been appointed as the new Military Advisor (MA) to the National Security Council Secretariat (NSCS).

This is the first time that a serving military officer has been appointed as the Military Advisor to the NSCS, which functions under National Security Advisor Ajit Doval.

Lt Gen Ghai, whose tenure in the service runs until December 2027, was appointed to the post earlier this week. He is expected to take charge soon.

This position was earlier held by General NS Raja Subramani before he was appointed as Chief of Defense Staff. Before him, the post was held by Air Marshal Sandeep Singh and earlier by General Anil Chauhan.

Commanding the Kumaon Regiment, Lt Gen Ghai held several key operational and command posts during his distinguished military career. His appointment is seen as a major step aimed at strengthening military input and operational expertise in the country’s top national security decision-making framework.
