The price of a 19 kg commercial LPG cylinder was increased by ₹993 with effect from May 1, which means a steep rise in rates. After the revision, the cost of a 19kg cylinder in Delhi is now at par ₹3,071.50.
However, the price of a 14.2kg domestic LPG jerrycan remains unchanged, fully insulating households from recent volatility in international fuel prices, according to news agency ANI.
The price of a 19 kg commercial LPG cylinder has been increased twice in recent months. First it was raised by ₹144 in March, followed by another hike of almost ₹200 on 1st April. The tripling is likely to hit diners, restaurants and other businesses hard as they rely on cooking fuel for their day-to-day operations.
The price hike comes amid continued tensions in West Asia following the outbreak of the conflict, which began on February 28 and is now in its eighth week. The standoff between the United States and Iran has disrupted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a key global energy corridor. This disruption affected oil supplies, contributing to volatility in energy prices.
Diesel and jet fuel prices are also rising
Indian Oil Corp Ltd. said prices of bulk diesel and aviation turbine fuel used for international airline operations were also increased. However, neither the statement nor the company’s website mentions the prices of both bulk diesel and ATF for international air operations.
Indian Oil said in a statement: “The price revisions have been limited to selected industry segments which account for a relatively small share of total consumption and are subject to routine monthly adjustments based on prevailing international prices.”
She further highlighted that bulk and commercial LPG accounts for 1% of India’s total consumption. The country’s annual consumption of LPG currently stands at around 33 million tonnes.
On petrol, diesel and domestic LPG prices, the oil marketing company said: “Retail prices of petrol, diesel and domestic LPG (14.2 kg cylinder) remained unchanged, fully insulating domestic consumers from the recent increase in international fuel prices.”
