The Center has made LPG Aadhaar biometric verification mandatory for customers as part of the ongoing initiative to verify genuine users.
The directive comes at a time when India is facing a shortage of LPG cylinders due to the war in West Asia, even forcing some restaurants and eateries to open temporarily. The war in the Middle East also gave rise to the hoarding and black marketing of LPG cylinders.
Commercial LPG supplies have been severely curtailed, limited to just 20 percent of the average monthly consumption for businesses, as the government prioritizes domestic cooking gas due to significant supply chain disruptions caused by the ongoing conflict in West Asia.
However, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas clarified in an X post on Tuesday that LPG Aadhaar Biometric Verification (eKYC) is required only for “unverified LPG customers” and not for all customers.
“If you are not a PMUY customer and have done so before, you do not need to do so again,” the ministry said.
“Some reports are circulating on the issue of biometric aadhaar authentication for LPG consumers,” the ministry noted, adding that “IT IS NOT A FRESH DIRECTION”.
The ministry said the latest eKYC directive was part of the government’s ongoing efforts to encourage more LPG consumers to complete biometric Aadhaar verification.
They noted that the eKYC requirement applies to LPG consumers who have not yet done eKYC.
The ministry also emphasized that PMUY (Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana) customers need to update their KYC only once in a financial year, “that too only to get targeted DBT subsidies after 7 recharges i.e. 8th and 9th recharge”.
The center has made the eKYC process easy and can be done sitting at home, free of cost. Here’s how you can fill your KYC LPG gas cylinder online:

LPG “eKYC ensures transparency, establishes clear eligibility, removes consumer ghosts and discourages misuse of LPG,” the ministry said.
