Iran’s war with the US and Israel, which has entered its third month, continues to put upward pressure on oil prices due to disruptions to the supply of one-fifth of global oil exports through the strategic waterway – the Strait of Hormuz. As a result of fuel supply disruptions caused by the evolving situation in West Asia, commercial LPG prices have undergone their third revision since the start of the conflict on 28 April.
To manage inflationary pressures, the government has intervened and kept domestic LPG, retail prices of petrol and diesel stable.

Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) chief Vaiko condemned the hike in commercial cooking gas prices by approx. ₹1,000 in one fell swoop when he sought the reversal of the price hike. According to the MDMK leader, over the past two months, “disruption in cooking gas supply has hit restaurants hard” and food prices have also risen drastically.
In particular, the price of a 19 kg commercial gas cylinder for cooking increased by ₹144 in March ₹203 in April and later ₹993 in May. Meanwhile, the price of a 14.2 kg domestic LPG cylinder has been increased ₹60 in March, but no revisions have been made since then.

Senior Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi also reacted to the situation. The 55-year-old politician claimed on Friday that domestic inflationary pressures are expected to increase after the election, pointing to a sharp rise in the price of commercial LPG cylinders.
In a post on social media platform X, Rahul Gandhi termed the recent hike in the prices of commercial gas cylinders as the “biggest increase in a single day,” saying, “I said it – the heat of inflation will come after the elections. Today the commercial gas cylinder ₹993 more expensive. The biggest increase in a single day. This is the electoral law. From February to now: ₹Up 1,380 – a whopping 81% increase in just 3 months.”
Rahul Gandhi further indicated that the impact of the price hike would be felt across small businesses such as tea stalls, dhabas, hotels, bakeries and sweet shops. Warning of a possible further rise in petrol and diesel prices, Gandhi noted that household spending would also be affected.
