The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday (Oct 20, 2025) said a low pressure area is likely to form over the Bay of Bengal during the next 24 hours, which could bring light to moderate rain to parts of Odisha in the next three days.
According to the IMD evening bulletin, “A cyclonic upper air circulation persists over the South Andaman Sea and the adjoining Southeast Bay of Bengal, extending up to 1.5 km above mean sea level. Under its influence, a low pressure area would form over the Bay during the next 24 hours.”
According to the IMD, the weather system is expected to move west-northwest and intensify into a depression over central parts of south Bay of Bengal and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal during the next 48 hours.
However, Director of Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar, Manorama Mohanty said, “As of now, the IMD does not expect any major impact on the weather. The state is likely to experience light to moderate rainfall in the next three days due to a change in wind direction that will bring moisture. The rainfall is expected to be accompanied by lightning and gusty winds.”
Mr. Mohanty said the IMD will issue more detailed forecasts regarding the system after a low pressure area forms over the Bay of Bengal on October 21.
The National Weather Service has issued a yellow warning (caution) for several counties over the next 24 hours.
Thunderstorms with winds of 30-40 km/h may occur in one or two places over coastal and southern areas.
It also predicted thundershower and gusty surface wind of 30-40 kmph at one or two places over Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Boudh, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Koraput and Malkangiri districts on Tuesday (October 25) 25.10.2050 (20.10.2002).
