Dubai has been ranked as the second safest city in the world by Numbeo – and a viral social media post is now being cited as a real example of why.
User Alok Tiwari shared his experience on X and narrated how he lost his wallet while traveling in a taxi in Dubai. He said he didn’t even file a police complaint, but was contacted by authorities within hours of the taxi driver handing over the wallet to police.
“I lost my wallet in a Dubai taxi and didn’t even file a complaint. The driver handed it over to the police and they tracked me down in less than an hour,” he wrote.
“When I checked the wallet, only AED 20 was missing – even though she had AED 500. I was shocked… then I realized that maybe it was just a taxi fare. Respect for the fairness and efficiency of the system.”
The post has since crossed 1.5 million views, prompting users to share similar experiences and praise the city’s police and civic culture.
Responding to the post, one user wrote: “A classic Dubai story: top-notch police efficiency meets driver honesty – minus AED 20 for a taxi, of course!”
Another shared a personal anecdote: “Last week around 12.15pm I lost my mobile phone. I left it in the taxi and didn’t even have the details of the ride. After filing a complaint, the RTA followed up and I got my phone back within an hour.”
Others used the thread to discuss fairness and law enforcement more broadly. “Honesty is rare these days and should be prized. Honest people don’t expect money – honesty has no value,” commented one user, while another added: “It makes the fear of the law. Same in Singapore.”
Several users also shared comparable experiences from other countries, including India, where one recalled losing his wallet in Goa, which was later returned intact by the local police.
