The Lok Sabha does not represent just one party but rather the entire country, Leader of the Opposition (LoP) Rahul Gandhi said on Wednesday (March 11, 2026), saying he was prevented from speaking in the Lower House several times.
Mr Gandhi was responding to BJP MP Ravi Shankar Prasad during the debate on the impeachment motion of Speaker Om Birla. Citing parliamentary procedures, Mr. Prasad said the LoP should carefully measure its words on matters of national security, especially when it is on foreign soil.
In response, Mr Gandhi said “disgraceful things” had been said about him during the debate. “The democratic process and the role of the Speaker are being discussed here. But several times my name is raised, vile things are said about me. This House is an expression of the will of the people. This House does not represent one party, it represents the whole country,” LoP said.
‘stopped talking’
“Every time we stand up to speak, we are stopped. The last time I spoke, I raised a crucial question about the compromises made by our Prime Minister. I was prevented from speaking several times. Only a few days ago, for the first time in the history of India, the Leader of the Opposition was not allowed to speak during the debate,” the Congress leader said.
Mr. Gandhi said that when he last spoke in Parliament, he raised the issue of “compromising the Prime Minister”.
“I raised the issue of Mr. Naravane, I raised the issue of Epstein, I raised the issue of Adani and I was silenced. These issues are fundamental to the people of India,” he said, referring to controversies involving former Chief of Army Staff MM Naravane, American child sex offender and disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein and billionaire Adani Gautam. “Our Prime Minister has been compromised; everyone knows the result,” Gandhi added.
