Lok Bhavan has “categorically” refuted Assembly Speaker AN Shamseer’s statement regarding the letter sent to him by the Governor.
A Lok Bhavan statement here on Wednesday said the original of the “highly confidential” letter had been delivered to the Speaker.
So far Lok Bhavan has not come to know that the said letter has been published by any media. Lok Bhavan did not appreciate the manner in which the Speaker responded to the letter addressed to him by the Constitutional Head of State. Rules and decency did not allow answering such a letter at a press conference.
Governor Rajendra Arlekar has always followed constitutional propriety, institutional dignity and established conventions in dealing with the legislature. Public insinuations questioning these principles without verification of facts were deplorable and undermined the decorum of high constitutional offices, the statement said.
The Lok Bhavan urged restraint, responsibility and respect for constitutional norms and expected future discussions on such sensitive matters to be guided by facts and decorum rather than conjecture, the statement said.
Spokesperson AN Shamseer claimed to have received a “copy” of the letter after it was received by the media. Responding to queries regarding the letter sent by the Governor seeking visuals of his political speech in the Assembly, Mr. Shamseer said the Speaker should be the first to receive the letter from the Governor.
It was “ironic” that the contents of the highly confidential letter were known to the public. “I don’t think the governor would do such a thing, but his office should look into whether the speaker’s office needed to respond to a copy of the letter,” Mr Shamseer said.
