Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister has offered an honest assessment of the club’s Premier League title defense and admitted he does not believe the reigning champions will retain their crown this season. His comments underline the growing unease at Anfield after a campaign that fell well short of expectations.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Mac Allister reflected on a turbulent year marked by sweeping changes and inconsistent performances. Although careful not to reveal all that goes on behind the scenes, the Argentina international acknowledged that the scale of the transfer in the summer had a visible impact on the pitch.
“A lot of things have changed like I said. New players have come in to replace those who left, we’ve changed too many things but I prefer to keep it to myself,” said Mac Allister.
The midfielder then delivered a brutally honest verdict on Liverpool’s title chances.
“There aren’t many chances for Liverpool to retain the title. I hate to say it, but it’s quite clear,” he added.
“Arsenal are in a really good moment, Manchester City are pretty close, but we’re not close in terms of performances or results, so I don’t see us being champions again.”
Mac Allister also admitted how difficult it was to combine last year’s success with current problems.
“It hurts because this should be a moment where we’re enjoying the Premier League we’ve won and we should be in a much better place than we are,” he said.
Liverpool’s slump came despite an extraordinary summer rebuild. The club spent around £446 million to bring in seven new first-team players, including new signings such as Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak and Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz. The new-look team was expected to build on the momentum of the 2024–25 title-winning campaign.
Instead, it was hard to find cohesion under new head coach Arne Slot. Halfway through the season, a goalless draw against Leeds on New Year’s Day left Liverpool fourth in the table, 12 points behind leaders Arsenal.
