IND vs SA 2nd Test Live Score: ‘It wasn’t sure if I would play Test cricket again, let alone in India’ – Senuran Muthusamy
Life has indeed come to a close for Senuran Muthusamy. In 2019, during a memorable debut series in India where he managed just two wickets in two Tests, the Indian-origin South African all-rounder feared that his international career was over and that he might never play for India again.
Fast forward to 2025, Muthusamy has cracked the code of the subcontinent. After a breakthrough series in Pakistan, where he took 11 wickets in the first Test and scored 89 not out in the second, he is now enjoying the best day of his career – a game-changing 109 against India at 201/5.
“My journey has been unique,” Muthusamy reflected. “I made my debut for India in 2019 and then I went back into the wilderness and it wasn’t sure if I would play Test cricket again, let alone in India. Cricket is a journey – you take it one day at a time.”
He credited the support of his family, teammates, coaches and sports scientist Cheryl Calder for helping him reach this point. Having to wait four years for another Test appearance after his debut, he endured a crushing domestic cricket to earn his way back.
Muthusamy, whose ancestors hail from Nagapattinam in Tamil Nadu, said: “I have never been there, although my mum and aunt have visited our extended family. It is part of my heritage, but generations ago.”
He sees himself as a true all-rounder, aiming to contribute with both bat and ball. “I try to add value wherever possible, be it bowling or batting,” he said.
On Sunday, he praised his teammates for their contributions. “Kyle Verreynne batted brilliantly against the new ball and Marco Jansen was amazing when he came on. His T20 experience, power and timing were a treat to watch. It was a wonderful partnership that really set up the innings.”
Muthusamy’s journey from a downtrodden debutant to a wrestling-defining performer highlights perseverance, resilience and the reward of hard work.
