In the government of Kerala, in moving to solve the growing problem of plastic waste, the government of Keral announced a new program to obtain a bottle for bottles with alcohol sold through Kerala State Bevarages Corporation (Bevco).
As part of a pilot project that will start in September, another £20 will be charged on every alcohol bottle – whether plastic or glass. This amount will be returned when customers return the bottles to the socket, according to the consumables department.

“Investing in responsible consumption”
The Minister of the Consumer Tax MB Rajesh stressed that £20 fees should not be considered as additional costs, but rather as “investment in responsible consumption”. Each bottle carries a QR code that will help monitor its return and process the refund.
Kerala sells about 70 bottles with crore alcohol every year, of which almost 80 percent are plastic. “It will help reduce the number of bottles thrown into the streets,” the minister said. In the next step to sustainability, the Ministry decided that all the price for liqueurs £800 is now sold exclusively in glass bottles.
Pilot start in two districts
The initiative, developed in cooperation with Clean Kerala Company, will be originally introduced in Thiruvananthapuram and Kannur. The state took allusions from Tamil Nadu, where there is a similar system of return and showed success.
The excise tax department is separately set to open the first super premium Outlet Bevco in Thrissur 5 August. These stores will include the above prices for foreign liqueurs £900, with plans to establish one such trade in each district.
