TB Venugopala Panikkar, 80, a well -known linguist, writer and head of Malayalam in retirement at the University of Calicut, died on Wednesday in his residence in Feroke, Kozhikode.
He was a native of Ezhikkara near North Paravur in the district of Ernakulam. After winning a university degree in physics and postgraduate title in Malayalam from Maharaja’s College, Ernakulam, Ma (Linguistics) with the first rank of Annamalai University.
Mr. Panikkar launched his academic career at the University of Madras as a research assistant in 1971. He became a teacher at the Malaysian department at the University of Calicut in 1973. The doctorate completed a critical study of Pitic of Keralapanineyam, under Sukumar Azhikode. Panikkar also worked as a dean of language and literature at the University of Cannur. He introduced over 100 contributions at national and international academic conferences.
Mr. Panikkar was the recipient of the Sahitya Academy Academy for the translation of the Malaysálam translation Toppil Mohammed Meeran’s Tamil novel Kooonanthopp in 2005. In 2005 he was awarded the Award for his visit to India. His books include Swanamandalam, Nos Chomsky, Bhashartham and Bhashalokam. Mr. Panikkar survived his wife, son and daughter. The last ceremonies will take place on Thursday at the Mavoor Road crematorium in Kozhikod.
