Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has directed the Chief Secretary to the state government to immediately review and take action to make submission of life certificate mandatory for beneficiaries of the Griha Lakshmi scheme, one of the five government guarantee schemes, similar to retired civil servants who are required to submit life certificate every year to get their pension.
The direction was in response to a request submitted by State Guarantee Board Vice-Chairman and MLC Dinesh Gooli Gowda to Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar. Acting on the request, the Chief Minister asked the Chief Secretary to look into the matter.
Under this scheme, ₹2,000 is credited to the bank accounts of the beneficiaries every month from June 2023 onwards. The scheme covers women identified as heads of families in Antyodaya, BPL and APL ration cards issued by the Food and Civil Supplies Department.
According to official data, financial assistance of about ₹ 57,300 crore has been disbursed to 1,24,12,543 eligible beneficiaries so far.
Mr. Gowda, on his behalf, pointed out that while the details of deceased beneficiaries are regularly verified, there are cases where assistance continues to be credited even after the death of the beneficiary. He stressed the need to prevent such leaks.
He called on the government to introduce a similar system as followed in the payment of pensions.
