At Bannerghatta Biological Park (BBP), a three-year-old leopard died of lung collapse and cardiomegaly (hydrothorax and cardiac myopathy).
The BBP said the leopard had stopped eating since October 30, after which a blood sample was taken and sent for examination.
“The animal had a high temperature, lethargy and loss of appetite. After a week of treatment, the leopard resumed feeding in small quantities. Oral medication was administered to the meat. On November 13, it stopped eating again. A blood sample was taken and sent for examination and treatment started again,” BBP said.
However, the leopard lay down and succumbed on November 19 due to a large amount of blood-tinged fluid accumulating in the chest and abdomen, causing lung collapse and cardiomegaly.
BBP said visceral samples were collected and sent to IAH&VB laboratory for further examination.
The leopard was rescued from the BRT Tiger Reserve in Chamarajanagar district in January 2023 when it was a three-month-old cub.
The death of the leopard comes on the heels of the death of 31 blackbucks at the Kittur Rani Channamma Zoo in Bhutaramanahatti, Belagavi district, due to a bacterial infection.
