A leopard and a cub were found dead under suspicious circumstances at Manjacombai in the Nilgiris forest division on Friday.
Officials said an autopsy was performed on the remains of the animals and samples of the animals’ visceral organs were taken and sent for forensic analysis to determine the exact cause of death. Officials from the division said they noticed the remains were cleaned and believe the leopard may have died in a fight with another carnivore or a pack of wild dogs.
However, they did not rule out that anthropogenic factors are behind the death of the animals. Further investigations are ongoing.
