Leeds United Eyeing Key Signings for Premier League Return
Leeds United are reportedly preparing to make a move for a "tremendous" defender if they secure promotion to the Premier League this season. With eight games remaining, Daniel Farke’s side is in a strong position to return to the top flight, and the club is already planning to strengthen its squad for the challenges ahead.
Midfield Reinforcements a Priority
Leeds are keen to bolster their midfield this summer, with injuries having exposed a lack of depth in the engine room this season. According to Graeme Bailey via Leeds United News, the Whites are plotting a loan move for Kalvin Phillips, who is currently on loan at Ipswich Town from Manchester City.
Phillips, a former Leeds fan favorite, is unlikely to remain at Ipswich permanently, and Pep Guardiola does not see him as part of Manchester City’s future plans. While his wages could be a stumbling block for a permanent return to Elland Road, Leeds are exploring a loan deal to bring him back to the club.
Defensive Target Identified
If promotion is secured, Leeds are also ready to pursue Borussia Mönchengladbach defender Nico Elvedi. Journalist Ben Jacobs revealed to Give Me Sport that Elvedi is interested in a move to Leeds, provided they are in the Premier League.
Farke, who knows Elvedi from their time together at Mönchengladbach, was keen to sign the Swiss international in January, but the player was reluctant to join a Championship side mid-season. However, with Leeds potentially returning to the top flight, Elvedi is now open to the move.
Jacobs highlighted Elvedi’s versatility as a key factor, stating: "Elvedi is more of a centre-back, but he’s equally comfortable at left-back. Leeds could kill two birds with one stone there, getting a player capable of playing in more than one position."
Elvedi’s Profile and Potential Impact
The 28-year-old has been a consistent performer in the Bundesliga, making 19 starts this season with one goal and one assist. His defensive stats are equally impressive, averaging 1.3 interceptions, 1.6 tackles, and 5.8 clearances per game. Described as a "tremendous player" by German football expert Chris Williams, Elvedi’s experience and versatility would make him a valuable addition to Leeds’ backline.
With his contract at Mönchengladbach running until 2027, Leeds may need to offer around £10 million to secure his services. If signed, Elvedi is expected to partner Joe Rodon as the club’s first-choice centre-backs.
A Busy Summer Ahead
Leeds’ potential return to the Premier League is set to spark a flurry of transfer activity, with midfield and defense identified as key areas for improvement. The potential signings of Phillips and Elvedi would not only strengthen the squad but also bring experience and quality to Farke’s side as they aim to establish themselves in the top flight once again.
