Leave Vaibhav Sooryavanshi alone, don’t expect the world from him: Sourav Ganguly
“Leave Vaibhav Sooryavanshi alone. That was Sourav Ganguly’s message when asked about the expectations surrounding the teenage batting sensation ahead of his likely India debut.
Ganguly, one of the biggest supporters of young talent in Indian cricket history, said fans should resist the temptation to expect instant success from the 15-year-old, who was recently named in India’s T20I squad to tour England and Ireland and included in the country’s full squad for the 2026 Asian Games.
Speaking on the sidelines of a promotional event in Mumbai, Ganguly called for patience as Sooryavanshi begins his journey with the national side.
“Leave him alone. Don’t expect the world from him right away. Just let him settle down because he has a lot of talent, like many others in India,” Ganguly said.
“He is only 15 years old and I don’t think he will be too bothered by the pressure and that is what we have seen from him in the IPL,” he added.
SOORYAVANSHI SET FOR INDIA DEBUT
Sooryavanshi made his way into the Indian plans after a remarkable rise through age-group cricket and two standout seasons that established him as one of the country’s brightest prospects.
After breaking several records in junior cricket, the youngster got an opportunity with Rajasthan Royals following the injury to then captain Sanju Samson. What started as a temporary replacement soon became a permanent selection and Sooryavanshi’s performances made it impossible for him to be left out of the playing XI.
The teenager now faces a completely different challenge at international level, as Ganguly was quick to point out.
“Obviously playing for India is different and he will go on a tour where the wickets will be a little different,” Ganguly said.
“It’s going to be seams and with the new ball there’s going to be a bit more bounce and a bit more movement so the game is a bit different. But I think he’s got huge talent,” he added.
Sooryavanshi will compete with Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan for a spot at the top of India’s T20I order. However, given the buzz surrounding the youngster, it would not be a surprise if India give him an opportunity during the two-match T20I series in Ireland starting on June 26.
