Members of the National BC Welfare Association staged a demonstration at Dharna Chowk in Vijayawada on Thursday, highlighting the struggles faced by people from communities in the state.

They said many BC Welfare Hostels lack basic amenities while some others need immediate repair. They also pointed out that after the restriction of reservation for BCs in local government institutions, political options for BCs have decreased. They demanded that the reservations be increased again to 34%.

They further demanded that BC centers should be set up in all district headquarters for organizing social, educational and cultural programmes.

A large proportion of BC communities continue to depend on traditional occupations for their livelihoods that have been affected by industrialization. This has led to a decline in their income and created an atmosphere of financial insecurity, the leaders said.

They also demanded a BC Protection Act that would prevent discrimination, violence and social humiliation against BC communities and protect their welfare and interests.
