The Left Democratic Front (LDF) will win 75 seats in the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation in the upcoming local body elections, CPI(M) leader and General Education Minister V Sivankutty said.
Mr. Sivankutty, Minister in-charge of Thiruvananthapuram district, said that the development works of the corporation had received appreciation from the BJP-led Union Government. However, BJP state unit president Rajeev Chandrasekhar seemed unaware of this when he leveled allegations of corruption against the LDF. “The accusations he made are indicative of his political bankruptcy.”
Mr. Sivankutty alleged that Mr. Chandrasekhar was making these claims because BJP’s defeat in the Corporation was certain. “BJP will lose more than half of its seats.
His remarks also raised questions about what the BJP councilors were doing in the corporation in the last five years and why the corruption charges were leveled now. This also raised the question as to why the central investigating agencies were not investigating the civic body all this while. “Let Mr. Chandrasekhar recommend the Union Government to withdraw the awards and recognitions received by the city corporations,” said Mr. Sivankutty.
He further claimed that Mr. Chandrasekhar was not even aware of the schemes in connection with which he had leveled the allegations and claimed that he would have them investigated. Some of the schemes go back to 1995 when he (Mr. Sivankutty) was the mayor. “He needs to clarify on what basis he made these claims.”
‘40% commission’
Mr. Chandrasekhar leveled allegations of “40% commission”, Mr. Sivankutty said, adding that people had started referring to the BJP state president as “Mr.” 40 percent” as a joke.
Mr. Chandraksehar, he quipped, is a self-proclaimed candidate from Nemom constituency and has started a public relations exercise. However, he had no contact with humans.
“Many serious allegations of corruption have been leveled against Mr. Chandrasekhar. It is our courtesy that we have not spoken about it till now,” he said.
Mr. Sivankutty said he would ask the Chief Minister to form a special team to investigate the recent death of a BJP councilor and a party member in Thiruvananthapuram. “Mr Chandrasekhar is silent on these deaths. He is also responsible as the families of those who died have forwarded complaints to him,” alleged Mr Sivankutty.
