The dominance of the United Democratic Front (UDF) in Ernakulam district will end with these elections, Communist Party of India (CPI) district secretary N. Arun said.
Addressing a press conference at the party’s district council office here a day after the local elections, Mr. Arun said the Left Democratic Front (LDF) would benefit from having an upper hand in seat-sharing, finalization of female candidates and later in the campaign as a united force.
The LDF, he said, faced the elections with a manifesto prepared through grassroots interactions and gathering public opinion. “People have fully accepted the development and welfare measures of the state government and this will prove decisive for victory. All attempts to undermine the government’s achievements have failed,” he added.
He claimed that the UDF would not stand in the Corporation. According to him, the UDF had entered into an open alliance with the communal forces against the LDF and the people would reject such an “unholy alliance” and give a befitting reply. The LDF, he claimed, would ensure a better victory than last time.
Mr. Arun said the LDF would also wrest power in the district panchayat, which it lost in the last elections. The UDF, he argued, faced the district panchayat elections with no confidence. Internal rifts, public outbursts over seat-sharing and the emergence of rebel leaders would all deal a blow to the UDF. He said the LDF would make great strides by capturing the UDF seats.
