Lawyers are boycotting courts in Thiruvananthapuram to protest the alleged police attack on a senior advocate
Lawyers boycotted courts in Thiruvananthapuram district on Friday to protest the city police’s “failure” to suspend a traffic police officer who allegedly assaulted KP Jayachandran, former additional advocate general and state president of the Indian Bar Association.
Mr. Jayachandran, former president of the Thiruvananthapuram Bar Association and current member of the Kerala Bar Council, was allegedly assaulted by a senior civilian police officer of the Thiruvananthapuram City Traffic Police near the Kerala Administrative Court in Vanchiyoor on Thursday.
The defense attorney claimed in the complaint that the police officer was taking pictures of all vehicles parked on the shoulder. When Mr. Jayachandran questioned the reason for his act, the police officer allegedly assaulted him and hurled abuse at him.
However, Vanchiyoor police maintained that there was no wrongdoing on the part of the officer. However, the complaint was being investigated. A case has not yet been registered, the official said.
The protest rally was organized under the leadership of Thiruvananthapuram Bar Association at Vanchiyoor Court Complex. The gathering was led by association president G. Gopidas, vice president Anitha Aji and other representatives of various organizations. They demanded the immediate cessation of the police officer’s activities. They also called for an investigation into the incident at the ministry.
